Water Scarcity and Perseverance: A Humanities Module
This standards-based, interdisciplinary humanities module uses historical fiction to tell the story of characters Nya and Salva to bring the discussion of water scarcity to the English/Language Arts, social studies, and science classroom. Students read the book with guidance from literary worksheets; research the causes and implications of the war in Sudan through the lens of geography, economics, civics and history; and learn about water management and desertification in science.
The Water Scarcity and Perservance climate change module was developed for middle school teachers in the humanities subjects including English Language Arts; media literacy; social studies with a focus on geography, economics, civics, and history; and service learning. It also includes opportunities to integrate engineering and design through physical and earth science. The focal point of the module is the book A Long Walk to Water.
However you choose to organize the content, we strongly recommend using this module in an interdisciplinary fashion. The integration of climate change education isn’t strong enough if students just read the book and do not complete the other subject area activities.
