COP 16 began this week in Cancun, Mexico. “COP16/CMP6 is the 16th edition of Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) and the 6th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP). “Parties” refers to all the national states that signed and ratified both of the international treaties, committing to observe and comply with its terms regarding international cooperation against climate change.” (COP16) We are excited to be following and supporting a number of youth that are observers at COP16. They include young college students, as well as group from a local high school, the School of Environmental Studies. As an educator this is a fantastic “real life” opportunity to discuss and follow the process of international negotiations with your students. If you are looking for more formally developed activities around the topics of the carbon cycle, targetting atmospheric carbon levels, climate technologies, cap and trade, carbon tax and equity in international negotiations, check out our Citizen Climate Lesson Plans . They were developed last year, before COP15, to help teachers discuss the basic concepts of climate change policy and negotation.
