Climate Generation receives Xcel grant for STEM education partnership

Grant Supports Green STEM Career Readiness in Minneapolis Public Schools
Climate Generation receives Xcel grant for STEM education partnership and educator resources

Minneapolis, Minn. — Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy announced it has received at $15,000 grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation to support the project titled: Green STEM Careers for Today and Tomorrow. For over 13 years, Climate Generation has worked with educators and designed STEM-based, interdisciplinary curriculum for educators nationwide.

“This funding allows us to continue our model of engaging middle school students in Green STEM Careers through our partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) STEM Expo, now in its third year,” said Nicole Rom, Executive Director at Climate Generation. “This partnership has allowed us to expose over 2,000 eighth grade students each spring to Green STEM career options in Minnesota.”

In addition to recruiting and mentoring a diverse array of Green STEM exhibitors and high school interpreters to provide engaging and inspiring activities during the 2020 STEM Expo, Climate Generation expects to create a curriculum package for eighth-grade teachers to introduce students to the possibilities of STEM careers that are solutions to climate change.  Climate Generation’s documentary, Green Careers for a Changing Climate, will be included in the curriculum, alongside a discussion guide and classroom activities.

Xcel Energy Foundation’s grant is part of the company’s corporate giving Education focus area, which supports nonprofit organizations like Climate Generation to provide hands-on learning opportunities that demonstrate the linkages between math and science, real-world applications, and future careers.

In addition to the support of the STEM Expo Partnership, Xcel Energy Foundation also provided funds to support the development and execution of two teacher workshops focusing on understanding the role of the new Minnesota State Science Standards.  These workshops will take place in Bloomington and St. Cloud this fall.
