Congressman Ellison wrote a great piece in the Huffington Post highlighting the need for the Environmental Protection Agency to pass strong carbon pollution standards for new and existing coal-burning power plants and called on Xcel Energy to transition Units 1 & 2 of the Sherco coal plant- Minnesota’s largest carbon emitter- to clean energy.

On November 6th, the Will Steger Foundation, Fresh Energy, Sierra Club, and many other partners joined over 250 friends and neighbors to support Rep. Keith Ellison’s climate and health rally in North Minneapolis. The event attracted a diverse audience and included a fantastic line-up of important voices: Reverend Lennox Yearwood with the Hip Hop Caucus, Polar Explorer Will Steger, Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner Ed Ehlinger, labor leader Javier Morillo, and many more. The Green Team performed two hip-hop climate songs, and a delegation of youth leaders from across the Twin Cities metro took the stage to share their insights from Power Shift 2013. The event culminated with a call to action, encouraging participants to sign a petition in support of the EPA’s carbon pollution standards.
Prior to the forum, over 75 youth leaders met with Congressman Ellison and Reverend Yearwood to share their concern for climate change and its impacts on their generation. Youth asked him several very poignant questions about local to national climate policies. Natalie Cook, our YEA! MN Coordinator had this to say about this portion of the event: “Great work last night from all of the students who led and attended the meeting on climate and environmental justice with Rep Keith Ellison and Rev Yearwood. This is democracy in action, and they rocked it!”
