Oakland, CA – The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) has awarded Climate Generation a 2021 Friend of the Planet award in recognition of the organization’s tireless efforts to help individuals and communities engage in solutions to climate change.

“I can’t praise Climate Generation highly enough for its work on climate literacy and action, especially for its extensive and effective outreach to educators,” said NCSE Executive Director Ann Reid. “For 15 years, Climate Generation has worked with communities and partners to effect solutions to the climate crisis. We’re so pleased to be involved in one such effort — Climate Generation’s 2021 Summer Institute for Climate Change Education, a virtual conference to help educators teach about climate change effectively.”

The Friend of the Planet awards are presented annually to a select few whose efforts to support NCSE and advance its goal of defending and supporting the teaching of climate science have been truly outstanding. Along with Climate Generation, the other 2021 winners are Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a marine biologist specializing in ocean conservation and climate policy and the co-editor of All We Can Save (2020), and Marshall Shepherd, the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia.

“As longtime partners of NCSE, we are honored to accept this award and be amongst the winners both past and present,” said Kristen Poppleton, Interim Executive Director at Climate Generation. “It’s our task as an organization, and as a team, to ignite and sustain the ability of educators, youth, and communities to act on the systems perpetuating the climate crisis.”

Previous recipients of the Friend of the Planet Award include climate communicator Katharine Hayhoe, Frank Niepold of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network.
