Rise up and demand change

Letter from the Executive Director

In the past year, Climate Generation has watched with frustration the dismantling of environmental policies, an increase in inequitable and dishonest platforms, and the rise of dehumanizing behavior from our country’s leadership. We have seen unjust actions against immigrants and we are committed to standing with marginalized people now and in the future. As climate change impacts intensify, migration experts expect the number of climate refugees around the world to increase.

Locally, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline, using a new route than where it’s current aging pipeline travels, we acknowledge the difficulty with which the decision was reached and feel disappointed by the impacts this decision will have on the climate cost to future generations. We were emboldened by the movement of our partners, tribal leaders, and especially the Youth Climate Intervenors, have led against the Line 3 pipeline. We know the clean energy economy is here and that climate change demands collective action as we move towards an equitable and renewable future.

Organizationally, we thanked Clare Brennan, a University of Minnesota student and our most recent Programs Intern who supported our inaugural Talk Climate Institute and annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education. Our Summer Institute was a resounding success, with educators reporting increased confidence and comfort to discuss, teach, and engage with climate change in the classroom. Similarly, the Talk Climate Institute we hosted in March is a model that is catching the attention of our partners; last week our staff led a similar training in Pittsburgh, PA. You can also find a full recap of our MN Is Still In June events online, including links to recent media coverage in WCCO, The Economist, and Public News Service.

Coming up in Minnesota and across the country are primaries and elections. Your vote is your voice: use your vote to elect officials who will make climate change a priority in office. Learn how you can impact climate change at the polls. And if you’re an artist or know an artist, encourage them to share their climate-themed art in a unique upcoming exhibition. There are plenty of ways to act on climate, to rise up, and to demand change.

Relive the Summer Institute

Over 50 educators from 20 states convened for the 13th Annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, MN in late June. Over 30 educators received scholarships from the Teach Climate Teachers Scholarship Movement. They spent three impactful days gaining the tools, resources, and confidence to teach climate change in their educational settings. Weren’t able to attend? Check out the recap page that includes testimonials, photos, and interactive resources from each day.

Educators: Documentary Brainstorm Sessions

We’re launching our new classroom documentary this fall! Green Careers for a Changing Climate will demonstrate to students a number of opportunities in green STEM careers. We need educators to help us design complementary materials for in-classroom use! If you are in the Minneapolis area, join us for two hours on July 24 or August 2 to brainstorm easy strategies for teachers to bring this resource to their students. Sign up now or pass this opportunity along to an educator you know. It will be a relaxed time with snacks and drinks!

People’s Climate Day of Action for Climate, Jobs, and Justice

On September 8, Climate Generation will join hundreds of partners mobilizing for climate, jobs, and justice in Minnesota! This is part of a worldwide day of action with People’s Climate Movement #RiseforClimate rallies to show public support for urgent climate change solutions. International leaders will be gathering at the Global Climate Action Summit in the days following this mobilization to commit to bold solutions. YWCA Interns Building Community Resource

This month we are excited to host two high school interns in the Climate Generation office through the YWCA Minneapolis’ Girls Inc. Eureka! program. Our interns are leading a project with ArcGIS Story Maps to create a resource map on the Greenway Building (where we office!) Their project will detail the amazing green infrastructure of the building, including solar panels and geothermal energy, and highlight the organizations that are housed within for the surrounding community.

Create Art for Climate Awareness

We’re excited to partner with Vine Arts Center for their upcoming World in Flux: Visions & Voices of a Changing Planet exhibition! The Minneapolis-based gallery is accepting submissions of art in all mediums from all areas of the country through August 5th. If your work tells a story, generates dialogue, asks questions, or challenges a new perspective on climate change, submit your work now. The exhibition will run from October 13–November 3, 2018. Keep up with details on the Facebook event.

Your Vote = Your Voice
