The Time is Now: Hear and Protect BIPOC Voices

Climate Generation recognizes the importance of this moment and asks everyone to vote. We as Black, Indigenous, staff leaders of color share the following statement in regards to the election.

This political moment is dire for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities — we are as much a part of the fabric of the United States as democracy itself. Over the last several years, this nation has seen a concerning rise in hate crimes against communities of color, an increase in inequitable and dishonest platforms, and the rise of dehumanizing behavior across our nation. Let us not normalize the reality of this political moment but instead prepare to defend our democracy together.

White supremacy is one of the greatest threats our communities and planet currently face. It is a cause and driving force behind climate change and undermines a peaceful transition of power through tactics such as voter intimidation, suppression, and more. As with climate change, the greatest harms are disproportionately on BIPOC communities.

We recognize that BIPOC voices have been typically excluded from the environmental movement that has been led and dominated by white voices. Now, more than ever, is the time to put the voices of those who have been most marginalized at the front and to make sure that they are heard, respected, and protected.

As BIPOC staff leaders at Climate Generation, we are asking our white allies to stand in solidarity with us in the following ways:

    • Think critically about how you can leverage your privilege to uplift us
    • Protect and increase accessibility for us at the polls
      • Accompany a BIPOC person to vote to ensure safety
      • Help a BIPOC person get to and from the polls
    • Shut down voter intimidation

To our BIPOC community:

You are in our hearts! We acknowledge the increased burden of impacts, needs, and safety, and understand that it is challenging to feel balanced. You are not alone. We invite you to join us as we lean into ways to stay grounded and promote care and wellbeing. We are also prioritizing personal safety, and finding ways to stay connected in community, and to feel the support of family, friends and allies – we stand with you!

Climate Generation’s vision is dedicated to building a world of resilient communities with equitable solutions to climate change. Now is time for us to band together, regardless of nationality, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, class, and race. With compassion, may we put aside our differences and act in the best interest of everyone, especially those that are impacted most by injustices of all forms. Only together can we uphold the sanctity of life, not only of humanity, but the earth that sustains us. Act for justice, act for unity, act for peace. And vote.
