Food Solutions: Climate Change Action for K-2
Food Solutions: Climate Change Action for K-2 focuses on food and climate, written by and for elementary educators! Early elementary educators can develop students’ foundational skills for building climate literacy; help students feel safe during times of fear and uncertainty; and take age-appropriate actions to be part of creating climate-adapted communities. By engaging our students in critical thinking and problem solving about complex issues like our food system and climate change, we prepare them to be leaders and participants in making their communities more resilient to climate change, now and in the future.
This resource is made up of three lessons which are designed to build off of one another. You will need to complete all three lessons in order to cover how habitats and climate change are connected in a way that is cohesive and supportive of students’ mental health. The lessons should be taught sequentially.
In this three-lesson resource, students will:
- Identify where food is accessed in their community and how it gets to their plates.
- Explore local and seasonal foods as one of many food solutions to climate change.
- Investigate, plan, and implement a class project to enhance climate-friendly food practices at their school.
