Youth Climate Justice Coordinator

Climate Generation ignites and sustains the ability of youth, educators, and communities to act on systems perpetuating the climate crisis. Based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Climate Generation strategically engages and empowers youth, educators, decision-makers and the public to foster climate literacy and action with the goal of building a more equitable and resilient future for all.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The Youth Climate Justice Coordinator will support Climate Generation’s Minnesota based Youth Programs supporting our organization’s youth programming that engages teens in the youth climate movement through leadership development, education, collaboration, advocacy, and action. Scope of work will include: recruiting and mentoring diverse students; and working collaboratively with staff and partners to create programming that builds leadership, educates and expands youth capacity to lead local climate justice actions. This position involves regular evening work and occasional weekend work and travel.

Essential Responsibilities:

Programs Support (60%)

  • Convene and facilitate the YEA! Network through regular (currently weekly) meetings, including program planning, facilitating peer mentorship, and strategic outreach to schools.
  • Support student leaders, youth program staff, and partners to orchestrate the Youth Climate Justice Summit, Summer Youth Convergence, youth retreats, and other youth events.
  • Provide direct mentorship to students to support their leadership in each of their school/home communities, including peer engagement, student-led action projects, and statewide campaigns.
  • Work with the Youth team to develop engaging training materials, digital resources, and field trips for student leaders to support grassroots organizing and leadership development.
  • Support youth to build their skills as anti-racist leaders, and help foster a community that centers those youth most marginalized by dominant US culture.
  • Engage high school students in the broader youth climate movement through education, collaboration, advocacy, and action, working closely with partner organizations.
  • Work collaboratively with educators/Earth Club advisors, and organizational partners to cultivate mutually beneficial and lasting relationships
  • Maintain open, transparent lines of communication within Climate Generation
  • Work with youth program staff and the rest of the Programs team to support deeper engagement of youth statewide.

Communications (30%)

  • Mentor student leaders on their role as Climate Generation ambassadors 
  • Support student leaders to provide timely and consistent blogs and other media
  • Mentor student leaders to provide remarks at peer workshops, public events, and press conferences
  • Provide content for Climate Generation communications, including the website, monthly e-newsletter and educator e-newsletter, mailed newsletter, annual report and blogs
  • Develop and share resources and products that promote Climate Generation initiatives including webinars, workshops and presentations
  • Coordinate with Program Managers and Communications Manager to ensure programs collateral is brand consistent, current and available for outreach opportunities

Organizational Health (10%)

  • Participate as an active member of the Climate Generation team through participation in bi-monthly team meetings, team planning days, antiracism leadership, and other essential Climate Generation activities.
  • Support cross-program efforts with educators, community engagement, development, and other organization-wide events 
  • Coordinate with Programs Coordinator on volunteer needs, event logistics, program materials, and vendor relations 
  • Seek opportunities to grow professionally

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in youth development and youth leadership development
  • Experience in facilitating experiential learning 
  • Experience in community organizing, and/or climate / environmental justice
  • Commitment to antiracism with experience in racially and geographically diverse communities
  • Passion for climate justice and the different ways that people power can create change.
  • Ability to communicate intersectional concepts for multiple learners at different levels of understanding
  • Ability to navigate conflict and adapt to challenges
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with a small and dedicated team
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted and authentic relationships with youth and partners
  • Comfortable with technology or ability to learn, including Zoom, Google docs, Slack, Trello, and Canva
  • Bi-weekly evening and weekend work commitments
  • Committed to an equitable workplace and integrating antiracism into program planning and operations 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in youth development and youth leadership development
  • Experience organizing in local policy campaigns, such as city, school board, county, conservation district, or similar efforts
  • Experience with grassroots community organizing in diverse racial and geographic areas.
  • Strong understanding of intersectional solutions of climate and racial justice

Compensation:

This is a full-time benefits eligible position with a salary range of $43,000-$45,000.
